From the field

A juvenile green sea turtle hangs in shafts of midday light at Salt Pier, Bonaire, turning back toward the sand floor twenty feet below. We had spent the better part of an hour down there with a small group of young greens, grazing and resting on the bottom, untroubled by our presence. This one rose for a breath, and I followed its line and waited for the descent. The green sea turtle spent four decades listed as Endangered before a 2024 assessment moved it to Least Concern, one of the genuine recoveries in marine conservation. When it turned and came back down, it drifted through the columns of light without a flick of effort.
