From the field

Sol Duc Falls drops through its slot canyon in Olympic National Park, the Sol Duc River splitting into several channels as it pours over the lip and down into the narrow gorge. Moss covers the rock walls, old-growth forest closes in on both sides, and soft light filters through the trees at the head of the canyon. We were camped at Sol Duc and woke early, wanting to be on the falls just after breakfast before anyone else made the walk in. It paid off. We had the place to ourselves for close to an hour, only the sound of the water and the light coming up through the mist. A quarter-second exposure held the falls as soft, moving white while keeping the wet rock and moss sharp. Some mornings are worth the early alarm.
