From the field

The Manhattan Bridge rises between two rows of red-brick warehouses on Washington Street in DUMBO, Brooklyn, the Empire State Building set small and exact inside the lower arch. I was in New York for work and had one early morning to myself, so I took the subway across the river and walked down into the neighborhood in cold, crisp air before sunrise. This is one of the most photographed corners in the city, usually crowded shoulder to shoulder by midday, and at that hour I had it to myself. The quiet let me take my time. I worked the composition until the distant tower sat centered between the bridge's uprights, the first warm light just catching the steel overhead while the cobblestones stayed in shadow below. By the time anyone else arrived, the frame was already made.
