The City to Myself
From the field
The Manhattan Bridge rises between two rows of red-brick warehouses on Washington Street in DUMBO, Brooklyn, the Empire State Building set small and exact inside the lower arch. I was in New York for work and had one early morning to myself, so I took the subway across the river and walked down into the neighborhood in cold, crisp air before sunrise. This is one of the most photographed corners in the city, usually crowded shoulder to shoulder by midday, and at that hour I had it to myself. The quiet let me take my time. I worked the composition until the distant tower sat centered between the bridge's uprights, the first warm light just catching the steel overhead while the cobblestones stayed in shadow below. By the time anyone else arrived, the frame was already made.

Printed as a pigment giclée on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta, a cotton fine art paper finished with a barium sulfate coating in the tradition of classic darkroom prints. The image is laid down with Epson UltraChrome Pro pigments, six colors and three shades of black, at 1,440 dpi, and the baryta surface pulls blacks to a depth few papers reach. Shadow detail stays readable, contrast holds, and color sits with real density.
My glossy prints carry the saturation and bright surface of a photographic finish. The baryta does something closer to the darkroom: a cotton sheet with weight and tooth, a restrained shine rather than a hard reflection, and the depth that comes from ink meeting a barium-coated fiber. It carries no optical brighteners, so what looks right on the wall today still reads true years from now. For an animal photographed in low light, where the frame lives or dies in its blacks, it is the surface I trust most.
